Liverpool 2005 Champions League final shirt

Ask any Liverpool fan for the greatest night in the club's history and most will give you the same answer: Istanbul, 25 May 2005. Three goals down at half-time against one of the best AC Milan sides ever assembled, Rafael Benítez's Liverpool came back to win the Champions League. The red shirt they wore that night is a piece of football history.

The night itself

Paolo Maldini scored in the first minute and Hernán Crespo added two more before half-time. Milan had Kaká, Shevchenko, Pirlo and Seedorf; Liverpool looked finished. Then, in six extraordinary minutes after the break, Steven Gerrard headed in, Vladimír Šmicer scored from distance and Xabi Alonso followed up his own saved penalty. 3-3.

Jerzy Dudek's double save from Shevchenko in extra time kept Liverpool alive, and in the shoot-out Dudek's wobbly-legged routine, a nod to Bruce Grobbelaar in 1984, helped Liverpool win 3-2. Gerrard lifted the trophy, and Liverpool kept the European Cup for good after their fifth win.

Liverpool's other European nights

Istanbul was Liverpool's fifth European Cup, and the first four came in the club's golden era. The 1984 European Cup final shirt was worn in Rome, when Liverpool beat Roma on penalties in their own stadium to complete a treble. Two classic finals, two shirts every Liverpool fan should know.
